Vernon incorporated first in 1892, while Kelowna wasn't incorporated until 1905 and Penticton in 1908. Today, Kelowna has surpassed Vernon in population, but Vernon remains an important cultural and economic center in the region.

With a land area of 95.76 km², Vernon has a population density of 461.7 per square kilometer, according to Wikipedia. Coldstream, on the other hand, has a land area of 66.57 km² but a population density of only 167.8 per square kilometer. This means that Vernon is much more densely populated than Coldstream.
